Legislative Lobbying

 
Evidently, NDEBUMOG, together, with other civil society groups played a critical role for the passage of the following laws by Nigeria’s National Assembly and lobbied for Bills stated below:
  • Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative Act
  • The Public Procurement Act
  • The Fiscal Responsibility Act
  • The Nigerian Minerals and Mining Act
  • The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Act
  • Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development Act
  • The Freedom of Information Act
  • 1999 Constitutional Amendment Bill
  • Electoral Act Amendment Bill

During the 6th and 7th (National) Assembly, NDEBUMOG was invited by the National Assembly to submit a memorandum and was offered the presentations’ “Hot Seat” for presentation to National Assembly. This was for the Petroleum Industry Bill (Bill). Whereas, the Bill was not passed by the 6th and 7th Assembly, part of NDEBUMOG’s recommendations on the “definition” of host communities attracted attention of stakeholders. Reasonable parts from NDEBUMOG’s definition have reappeared in subsequent versions of the PI(G)Bill.

  • The Whistle Blowers Protection Bill
  • The Petroleum Industries (G) Bill and distinct Bills for extractive restitutions and fiscal justice to extractive communities. Amendment of Nigeria’s Constitution to grant autonomy to Local Governments and true fiscal federalism in Nigeria, among others.
